The
challenge: To design and build a display with
all Earth-friendly materials that could be set up and
taken down quickly as well as store flat inside a road
case on Bonnie Raitt's 2005-2006 tour.
The creation: The display was designed
to have three panels, made with recycled chipboard,
where the two outer panels would fold in when taken
down, allowing the piece to store flat. An image of
a redwood forest (courtesy of Jodie Coston) was purchased,
printed, cut and mounted to the three panels of the
display. The three bags at the bottom of the center
panel, which hold the printed brochures, were sewn together
with hemp fabric and supported with recycled aluminum
rims that fit securely into holes drilled into the display.
This allowed the bags to quickly be removed from the
display and also store flat. Holes were also drilled
every 1/2 inch around each panel where hemp twine was
threaded through for extra protection and to add more
of an organic texture to the design. The back was painted
with lush green hues reminiscent of forest leaves and
shrubs.
The brochure was printed with soy-based inks on recycled
paper and along with the display can be seen at venues
on Bonnie Raitt's tour. To learn more about Green Highway
